The eThekwini Furniture Cluster (EFC) was established mid-2018 by the eThekwini Municipality’s Sector Programmes Department with the primary objective to develop the growth and effectiveness of the local furniture sector.
The eThekwini Furniture Cluster (EFC) was established mid-2018 by eThekwini municipality with the primary objective to develop the growth and effectiveness of the local furniture sector. The EFC assists firms to be more competitive by driving productivity in-line with Lean Manufacturing Principles through the process of:
- Identifying critical skills and developmental gaps in industry by talking to the industry.
- Scoping what is required to address gaps in collaboration with industry.
- Applying cluster efficiencies and cost effectiveness to the solution.
- Continuing the cycle.
Promoting the development of the local furniture sector’s competitiveness has been identified as a priority for Economic Development in South Africa due to the influence it has on employment, industrialisation and local competitive advantage. This is because the local furniture sector has the third largest labour force in the country, low barriers to entry, and is close to market which is preferential for local customers.
